Claude Science has arrived: an AI workbench just for scientists is now in beta!
Hi, it's me, Shii-chan! Today I found some news that researchers are going to love. Claude just stepped right into the world of science!
Anthropic News
What was announced?
Anthropic's News announced that Claude Science, an AI workbench for scientists, is now available in beta. Since it comes from the News feed, this is a brand-new launch announcement.
Claude Science brings together the research tools that usually end up scattered around. In one place, you can dig through literature, run multi-step research, produce detailed artifacts, and keep refining figures and manuscripts until they're publication-ready. What an ambitious workbench!
Why it matters
Research tends to spread your tools all over the place: one thing to search literature, code to run analyses, software to make figures, plus databases. Just bouncing between them can eat up a whole day.
Claude Science's key idea is pulling those scattered tools into a single environment. It also keeps a record for reproducibility, so you don't have to wonder "how did I get that result again?" It takes care of the groundwork of research for you!
What changes
The biggest shift is being able to go end-to-end: search, analyze, and write all in one flow.
The announcement shared stories from people who used it. Manifold Bio, a drug-discovery startup, said that unlike a general coding assistant, it could gather the right data and apply the right judgment with the context of past programs built in. Jérôme Lecoq, a neuroscientist at the Allen Institute, said writing a review that used to take up to two years now takes months — he now has about 10 reviews, many over 100 pages. Stephen Francis at UCSF said his analysis now runs in roughly one-tenth the time it used to take!
On top of that, Team plans offer discounted seats for academic institutions and nonprofit research organizations. So thoughtful for researchers!
Dive Deep
Let's look a bit closer. Claude Science comes with over 60 skills and connectors across many scientific fields.
- Domains: genomics, single-cell analysis, proteomics, structural biology, cheminformatics
- Rendering: native display of 3D protein structures, genome browser tracks, and chemical structures
- Databases: UniProt, PDB, Ensembl, Reactome, ClinVar, ChEMBL, GEO
- Compute: switch between your local machine, HPC clusters, and on-demand GPUs via Modal
- Reviewer agent: checks citations and calculations for you
- Integrates with NVIDIA's BioNeMo Agent Toolkit, with models like Evo 2, Boltz-2, and OpenFold3
For now it's a beta on macOS and Linux, available to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users.
There's also an "AI for Science" support program. Up to 50 projects can each receive up to $30,000 in credits, and selected projects also get up to $2,000 in compute credits from Modal. Applications are open through July 15, 2026, award notifications go out by July 31, and projects run from September 1 to December 1, 2026!
