Agent Skills Is Being Donated to the Agentic AI Foundation!
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Big news about Agent Skills today, so let's dig in!
Anthropic NewsWhat was announced?
In Anthropic's News, they announced that Agent Skills, an open standard, is being donated to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), which operates under the Linux Foundation.
Here is what is being donated:
- The standard itself
- The Agent Skills name and logo
- The GitHub organization
- The agentskills.io domain
Why it matters
Skills came out of work on Claude Code. Claude Code handled general knowledge work well, but often lacked the procedural knowledge needed for real business tasks. A skill is a folder that teaches an agent a specific task or domain.
The timeline looks like this:
- October 2025: skills launch. Within weeks, developers published thousands of skills on GitHub and wrote loaders for Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode
- December 2025: Anthropic publishes Agent Skills as an open standard
- Now: the standard moves to a neutral foundation
Anthropic co-founded the AAIF with Block and OpenAI, and has already donated the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to it.
What changes
The standard moves out of a single company's hands and grows under community-driven governance.
- Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and others will maintain it as individuals
- David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag are the Lead Maintainers
- You can use or contribute to the standard without joining the AAIF
If you write skills or build tools that load them, you now have a vendor-neutral standard to rely on.
Dive Deep
A skill is simple: a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a specific task or domain. It can also include scripts and reference material.
Here are the numbers from the announcement:
- More than 70 agent platforms have integrated it, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code
- 1 million skills published in total
- Nearly 280 million skills installed
A proposed roadmap covers:
- Versioned releases
- A formal proposal process
- Security guidance for people who write and install skills
As with MCP, the project will prioritize community input and transparent decision-making. The specification is at agentskills.io, discussion happens on GitHub, and you can give feedback on proposed spec changes on the project's Discord.
Wrap-up
- The Agent Skills open standard is being donated to the AAIF under the Linux Foundation
- The name, logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io move along with it
- 70+ platforms support it and 1 million skills are published
- The roadmap includes versioned releases, a proposal process, and security guidance
This one is for anyone writing skills or building them into agent products!
