What was announced?

Anthropic News announced "Anthropic opens Singapore office and signs MOU with the Government of Singapore". It is Anthropic's fifth office in the Asia-Pacific region, and the MOU is with Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI).

Why it matters

Anthropic says Singapore is one of its most active markets. In the latest Economic Index, Singapore ranks second of 121 countries for Claude.ai usage relative to population, at nearly six times what its size alone would predict. Claude already supports services used by millions of people daily, including those of GovTech Singapore, Grab, and DBS.

What changes

A local team means Anthropic can work more closely with organizations using Claude on their hardest problems. The MOU covers three areas:

  • AI safety, security, and model evaluation
  • Research on AI adoption and its impact
  • Responsible adoption across the public and private sectors

Dive Deep

The MOU was signed by MDDI Permanent Secretary Kai Fong Chng and Anthropic co-founder Ben Mann on the sidelines of Singapore International Cyber Week, witnessed by Minister Josephine Teo and Michael Sellitto. Anthropic's work in Singapore dates to 2023, when it joined the Generative AI Evaluation Sandbox run by IMDA and the AI Verify Foundation, and later a red-teaming project in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil.

Planned activities include:

  • Technical exchanges with AI safety, security, and assurance institutions on model evaluation, testing standards, and incident response
  • Strengthening AI skills in Singapore
  • Helping small and medium-sized businesses adopt AI responsibly
  • Supporting the government's goal of building AI capability among public officers
  • Sharing research and data, including from the Anthropic Economic Index
  • Offering technical and policy expertise as Singapore develops its AI rules

Examples of use in Singapore:

  • GovTech Singapore: more than 1,500 engineers use Claude Code to modernize government systems
  • Cyber Security Agency of Singapore: exploring Claude for cyber defense
  • DBS: software development and daily productivity
  • GIC: rolling out Claude across investment and corporate services teams
  • Grab: its BriX sales assistant saves about 40,000 hours every quarter
  • Sea: Shopee customer service chatbot and thousands of employees writing code
  • Regulated sectors: in-region inference on Amazon Bedrock

Builder Summit Singapore brought together more than 300 developers, and a meetup earlier in the week drew more than 700 builders. The office is open and hiring.

Wrap-up

  • Fifth Asia-Pacific office opens in Singapore
  • MOU with MDDI on AI safety, research, and responsible adoption
  • Singapore ranks second of 121 countries in per-capita Claude.ai usage
  • Government, finance, and e-commerce organizations already use Claude

This is for anyone following AI adoption and policy in Asia!
