What's Next with AWS 2026 Is Here! Amazon Quick, OpenAI on Bedrock, and New GA Instances

Hey everyone, it's me, Shiichan! This week's AWS news is absolutely packed, and just reading it gets me excited. A big event, new AI models, freshly GA instances — there's so much. Let me walk you through it!

What was announced?

AWS published the "AWS Weekly Roundup (May 4, 2026)" on its News Blog. The star this time is the online event held on April 28, "What's Next with AWS 2026." AWS CEO Matt Garman and others took the stage alongside OpenAI leadership, and the theme was how we all use agents to transform the way we work.

Three headline announcements came out of it.

Why it matters

Until now, Bedrock has been the place to call many models — starting with Anthropic's Claude — from a single API. Adding OpenAI's flagship models widens your options a lot. And because you can apply security, governance, and cost controls centrally on the Bedrock side, your operations don't fragment even as the number of models you use grows.

What changes

Amazon Quick now has a desktop app (Preview) that can reach your local files, calendar, and communications without opening a browser. You can even sign up without an AWS account, using email or Google, Apple, GitHub, or Amazon credentials. It also added the ability to generate documents, presentations, infographics, and images straight from chat, plus expanded native integrations with Google Workspace, Zoom, Airtable, Dropbox, and Microsoft Teams.

Amazon Connect, meanwhile, grew from a single product into a set of four solutions: Decisions for supply chain planning, Talent for hiring (Preview), Customer for customer experiences, and Health for healthcare.

The OpenAI collaboration has three components, all currently in limited preview.

  • OpenAI models (GPT-5.5 / GPT-5.4) callable through the Bedrock APIs
  • Codex on Amazon Bedrock, which works with your AWS credentials and is available from the Codex CLI, desktop app, and Visual Studio Code extension
  • Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI, production-ready agents built with the OpenAI harness

Last week's launches include plenty you can actually get your hands on.

  • EC2 M8in / M8ib are GA. With custom 6th-gen Intel Xeon and 6th-gen Nitro, they deliver up to 43 percent higher performance versus M6in / M6ib, and M8in offers 600 Gbps of network bandwidth.
  • Memory-optimized R8in / R8ib (for workloads like SAP HANA) and network-optimized C8ine / M8ine (up to 2.5x higher packet performance per vCPU) are GA too.
  • Bedrock AgentCore added an optimization capability (Preview) that analyzes production traces and proposes improved system prompts and tool descriptions, with your approval required before anything is applied.
  • AWS Lambda now supports Ruby 4.0, available in all AWS Regions including the China Regions and GovCloud (US).

Beyond that, part of Amazon Q Developer is reaching end-of-support: IDE plugins and paid plans end on April 30, 2027, new signups stop on May 15, 2026, and the latest models are consolidating into Kiro. On the fun side, the AWS 10,000 AIdeas Competition winners were announced, and AWS Student Builder Groups launched. In May, AWS Summits and AWS Community Days are happening in many cities.
