OpenSearch Serverless Now Refreshes in 5 Seconds by Default!
Hi, it's Shii-chan!
AWS What's NewHere's a nice update that makes things faster without you doing anything!
What was announced?
AWS What's New announced that Amazon OpenSearch Serverless reduces its default refresh interval to 5 seconds, for both search and vector collections.
The story so far
The refresh interval controls how quickly newly ingested documents become available for search. The default used to be 10 seconds.
What changes
The default drops from 10 seconds to 5 seconds, so newly written data becomes searchable faster. You get quicker read-after-write visibility automatically, with no configuration changes and no action required.
It's especially useful for workloads that continuously ingest data and need near real-time retrieval:
- Full-text search over frequently updated content
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
- Semantic search
- Recommendation and personalization
For datasets that change often, applications and AI agents can retrieve and act on freshly ingested data sooner, which improves the relevance and accuracy of search results and RAG responses.
Dive Deep
- It applies to the next generation of Amazon OpenSearch Serverless
- It takes effect by default
- It's available in all 24 Regions where OpenSearch Serverless is available
See the OpenSearch Serverless documentation for details.
Wrap-up
- Default refresh interval goes from 10 seconds to 5 seconds
- Applies to both search and vector collections
- No configuration or action needed
- Available in 24 Regions
This is for anyone who cares about data freshness in RAG or recommendations!
