AWS Builder ID Adds Recovery Email and MFA — Say Goodbye to Lockouts!
Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today's news is relevant to everyone using AWS Builder ID.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New announced stronger security and recovery options for AWS Builder ID, your personal profile for accessing AWS Builder Center, AWS Training and Certification, Amazon Quick, Kiro, and more.
The story so far
Until now, if you forgot your password or lost your MFA device, self-service recovery options were limited, and some situations required contacting AWS Support. Also, if you signed in through a third-party account like Google, Apple, GitHub, or Amazon, you couldn't register an MFA device directly on Builder ID.
What changes
With this update, you can now:
- Add a recovery email as a second verification factor alongside your primary email
- Reset a forgotten password using a link sent to either your primary or recovery email
- Regain access after losing your MFA device by verifying both your primary and recovery emails
- Register MFA devices directly in Builder ID even if you sign in with Google, Apple, GitHub, or Amazon
- Permanently switch to email-and-password sign-in if you lose access to your third-party account
Why it's good news
With a recovery email on file, more lockout scenarios can be resolved through self-service instead of contacting AWS Support. Third-party login users also now get the same strong account protection that email-and-password users already had.
Wrap-up
- AWS Builder ID now supports registering a recovery email
- MFA devices can be registered for any sign-in method, including Google, Apple, GitHub, and Amazon
- More lockout scenarios can now be resolved through self-service
- If you use Kiro, AWS Builder Center, or similar and haven't set up a recovery email or MFA yet, now's a good time
