MediaTailor's Ad Insertion Gets a Final Quality Check!

Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I found a slightly niche but genuinely useful update in the video-ad world. AWS Elemental MediaTailor, the service that personalizes and inserts ads into live and on-demand streams, just got new tools for controlling ad quality more precisely. Let me walk you through it!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, MediaTailor's Monetization Functions now support two new lifecycle hooks.

  • Post ADS response hook: runs after MediaTailor parses the ad decision server (ADS) response and resolves all VAST wrappers, but before ads are selected and transcoded
  • Pre manifest insertion hook: runs at the very last point before MediaTailor hands the ad pod to the viewer

Monetization Functions let you run your own custom logic at defined points in an ad-personalized playback session, removing the need for a separate middleware tier between MediaTailor and your ADS.

The story so far

Monetization Functions already existed, but these two new hooks let you step in at two very specific moments: right after the ad response comes back, and right before it reaches the viewer. Before this, getting that level of control meant standing up your own middleware between MediaTailor and the ADS.

What changes

With the post ADS response hook, you can now:

  • Call a secondary ad source when your primary ADS doesn't return enough inventory to fill the break
  • Remove ads that violate your content or brand policies
  • Insert house ads or promotions from your own marketing systems

The pre manifest insertion hook receives every newly personalized ad break in a single invocation, so you can use it as a last sanity check on what's about to play — including swapping in a personalized slate when a break simply can't be filled any other way.

The MediaTailor console also ships pre-built recipes for each of these use cases, so you don't have to write a function from scratch to get started.

Dive Deep

Both hooks are designed to fail open. If a timeout, expression error, or resource limit occurs, MediaTailor discards the function's output and falls back to default ad insertion — so a problem in your function never breaks playback for viewers.

Wrap-up

  • MediaTailor Monetization Functions now offers a post ADS response hook and a pre manifest insertion hook
  • You can swap ads or run brand-safety checks at two precise points: right after the ad response and right before delivery
  • Pre-built console recipes plus fail-open behavior make it safe and easy to adopt

If your team is already monetizing streams with MediaTailor, this is a nice way to sharpen ad quality without adding another middleware layer!
