Step Functions now adds new AWS integrations automatically, no more waiting!
Hey, thanks for stopping by, it's me! Today's update is a quiet one for workflow orchestration, but it's a good one!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, AWS Step Functions will now automatically add SDK integrations for new AWS services within weeks of their release. The first services to get this treatment are AWS Lambda MicroVMs and AWS Lambda Core.
Step Functions is a visual workflow service capable of orchestrating over 220 AWS services to help build distributed applications at scale. With this change, you no longer have to wait for a dedicated Step Functions integration to show up before you can orchestrate a new AWS service from your workflows.
The story so far
Previously, using a new AWS service from Step Functions meant waiting for that service's dedicated integration to be released. That created a lag between a new service launching and being usable from a Step Functions workflow.
What changes
- New AWS services become available as Step Functions integrations within weeks of release, with no extra configuration required
- The AWS Lambda MicroVMs integration lets you launch isolated, secure execution environments for each agent task directly from Step Functions
- Built-in retries kick in if an environment fails to start
- You can run multiple agent tasks simultaneously using Step Functions' Parallel or Map states
- Environments can be automatically terminated once a task completes
- Combined with AWS Lambda Core, you can configure the private networking those MicroVM environments need to securely reach internal databases or APIs, all within the same workflow
Dive Deep
This expansion also includes integrations for:
- AWS Partner Central Revenue Measurement
- AWS Resilience Hub V2
- AWS Support Authorization
- Amazon SageMaker Job Runtime
AWS says that going forward, new AWS services will automatically appear as Step Functions integrations within weeks of their release, with no additional configuration or action required. Because these updates will now be continuous, AWS also says it will no longer publish individual What's New posts for each new integration. In other words, this announcement is less about one feature and more about a change in how integrations get added going forward.
Being able to orchestrate isolated agent execution environments without writing custom coordination code is especially useful for teams that want to run multiple agent tasks safely and in parallel.
Wrap-up
- Step Functions now automatically adds new AWS service integrations within weeks of release
- AWS Lambda MicroVMs and AWS Lambda Core are the first to launch with this approach
- Lambda MicroVMs enables isolated execution environments, built-in retries, parallel execution, and automatic termination
- Lambda Core adds the private networking those environments need, configurable in the same workflow
- Also added: Partner Central Revenue Measurement, Resilience Hub V2, Support Authorization, and SageMaker Job Runtime
- Future integrations won't get individual announcements
This one's for developers building agentic workflows on AWS, and for teams using Step Functions to automate their infrastructure operations!
