Surprise Team-Up! Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, Built with OpenAI, Is Here

Hi, it's Shii-chan! Today's news is a surprising combination!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents (BMA) is now available in preview. It was developed jointly by AWS and OpenAI, and it's built on a customized version of OpenAI's Agents API engineered to be AWS-native.

Why it matters

You can build agents optimized for OpenAI models that run entirely inside AWS, with the identities, permissions, and governance controls you already use. It looks like an answer to the common question of what to do about permissions and logging when agents go to production.

What changes

BMA manages how the model preserves state, selects and uses tools, executes code, and coordinates work across multiple steps. That means less of the agent foundation to build yourself!

Dive Deep

Here's what the announcement tells us:

  • Durable sessions: messages, tool calls, and intermediate results are retained, so you can return later, add new information, and continue from the progress already made
  • Skills: add reusable skills for specialized procedures
  • Tools: connect agents to tools, including via Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers
  • IAM: each agent operates with its own IAM role
  • Human approval: supported before consequential actions
  • Auditing: supported API activity is recorded with AWS CloudTrail

On pricing, there is no additional charge during preview beyond the underlying AWS resources your agents consume. Pricing may change at general availability. It's available in these three Regions:

  • US East (N. Virginia)
  • US West (Oregon)
  • US East (Ohio)

You get started through supported APIs. See the Amazon Bedrock documentation for details.

Wrap-up

  • Bedrock Managed Agents, co-developed by AWS and OpenAI, is in preview
  • An AWS-native agent foundation built on a customized OpenAI Agents API
  • Durable sessions, skills, MCP, per-agent IAM roles, human approval, and CloudTrail logging

This is one to watch if you want to run OpenAI-model agents on AWS with governance built in!
