Amazon Textract Lands in Tokyo and Zurich at Last!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! When I heard Textract is now in the Tokyo Region, I got so excited!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon Textract is now available in the Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and Europe (Zurich) Regions.

Amazon Textract is a machine learning service that automatically extracts text, handwriting, and data from scanned documents. It goes beyond simple OCR to identify and extract text and structured data.

Why it matters

Choosing which Region to run in is an important decision for latency and data location requirements.

With Textract in Tokyo and Zurich, teams that keep their data and other systems in these Regions can more easily process documents without leaving the Region.

What changes

If your workloads run in Tokyo or Zurich, you can now use Textract for text extraction and document analysis without calling it in another Region.

Not every feature is available in these Regions yet, so be sure to check the list below!

Dive Deep

These operations are supported at launch in the two new Regions:

  • DetectDocumentText
  • AnalyzeDocument

  • GetDocumentTextDetection
  • StartDocumentAnalysis
  • GetDocumentAnalysis

These are not available at this time:

  • AnalyzeExpense
  • AnalyzeID

  • Custom Queries (adapters)

With this launch, Amazon Textract is available in 18 AWS Regions in total:

  • Asia Pacific: Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and the newly added Tokyo

  • Six text detection and document analysis operations are supported at launch
