Claude Tag can finally read the whole room in your Slack channel!

What was announced?

Anthropic's Claude Blog announced an update to Claude Tag. Previously, it only looked at the single message it was tagged in to decide how to respond. Now it also draws on context from across the whole channel, plus its own memory. According to the post, this change improved the accuracy of its "should I respond" decisions by about 30%.

The story so far

Until now, Claude Tag classified each tagged message on its own, deciding to respond or not based on that single message. Because it only saw one message at a time, it sometimes missed the surrounding context and gave answers that didn't quite fit the conversation.

What changes

With channel-wide context, Claude Tag now has four response modes:

• Reply inline right away for short, verifiable answers
• Start a threaded investigation for more complex work
• Route the message into an existing workstream if one's already happening
• Stay silent when it decides a human is better suited to respond

There's also a new "channel sleep mode": in quiet channels, Claude pays less attention until it's directly @-mentioned again, so it won't flood low-traffic channels with notifications.

The time to Claude's first acknowledgment also dropped, from around 60 seconds down to just a few seconds. Worth noting: this is about the initial response time, not the time it takes to actually finish the work — that hasn't changed.

Claude Tag decides whether to respond using a rubric that weighs how useful an answer would be, how confident Claude is, and whether a human would be better suited to answer. You can give it plain-language standing instructions (like "never respond unless tagged"), and any channel member can flip a manual toggle for automatic responses. No special setup is required to get started.

This is live now for Claude Teams and Enterprise plans at no extra cost — the expanded context tracking doesn't count against usage limits either.
