Claude Cowork and Chat Are Finally One! Docs and Slides Launch in Beta

What was announced?

Anthropic's Claude Blog announced that Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude. Claude Cowork, which used to be a separate space for bigger projects, and Claude Design, built for visual work, are merging with everyday chat into a single Claude product.

The story so far

Until now, you had to pick the right tool for the job: chat for quick questions, Cowork for larger projects, Design for visual work. Anthropic says users found it frustrating to figure out which tool suited which task, and worse, context didn't carry over when you switched between them.

What changes

With the merge, a single Claude now handles everything from quick questions to complex projects.

  • Context, skills, and connectors carry across every task
  • Claude decides for itself what a given task needs
  • You can adjust how often Claude checks in with you

By default, Claude asks before taking an action. If you'd rather it keep working and only check in when something needs a closer look, you can turn that on.

Dive Deep

New features shipped alongside the merge:

  • Claude Docs: a beta feature where you ask for a document and write it together with Claude
  • Claude Slides: a beta feature where you ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides
  • Claude Design: now works directly inside conversations, letting you edit, present, or export to PowerPoint and PDF

The rollout is gradual: Pro and Max plan subscribers get it first, across web, desktop, and mobile, over the next few weeks. Team and Free plans will follow. Enterprise admins get to choose whether to enable it, with advance notice ahead of time.

If you were already a Cowork user, nothing is lost, all your previous chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills carry over. If you're a regular chat user, nothing changes day to day, but the expanded functionality is there whenever you need it.
