Claude Code v2.1.283: One Command to Audit Your CLAUDE.md for Outdated Prompting!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! I found the latest Claude Code release notes today and I couldn't help leaning forward with excitement. There are so many changes packed in here that just reading through them got me hyped!
Claude Code ReleaseWhat was announced?
Today I'm covering Claude Code v2.1.283, announced by Claude Code Release on its GitHub releases page. The notes are organized into Added, Fixed, Changed, and Platform-Specific Fixes (covering VSCode, Cloud Sessions, Claude Tag in Slack, and Code Review). Rather than one single headline feature, this release is a dense bundle of improvements to daily workflow and operations.
Why it matters
Claude Code ships updates frequently, so keeping up with these incremental releases really matters. This one is especially relevant if you're operating Claude Code across a team or focused on DevOps/infrastructure: it adds managed settings for controlling which models can be used, a new command that audits how you've written your prompts, and stronger OpenTelemetry observability. The fix list is also wide-ranging, touching MCP, SDK sessions, Vim mode, and even a Windows security issue, so anyone using Claude Code day to day will likely feel the benefit.
What changes
Here are the three things I'd flag first.
/doctor prompt-audit(also available as/checkup prompt-audit): a new command that audits your CLAUDE.md files, skills, agents, and commands for prompting patterns written for older models. If you've been running a project for a while, some of that phrasing tends to go stale, so this is a nice way to do a cleanup pass.deniedModelsand theavailableModelsMatch: "exact"managed setting: admins now get finer-grained control over which models can be used.deniedModelsblocks specific models even ifavailableModelswould otherwise allow them, and setting"exact"means new model releases stay blocked until they're explicitly listed, instead of being auto-allowed. Great for teams that want tighter model governance.OTEL_LOG_TOOL_CONTENT=1now includes MCP tool, WebFetch, and WebSearch outputs: these outputs are now included in thetool.outputOpenTelemetry span event, making it easier to observe what your tools are actually doing when debugging operations.
One more change worth noting from the "Changed" section: interactive sessions on third-party providers, or with telemetry turned off, now start in auto mode by default when no permission mode is configured (permissions.defaultMode still takes priority if you've set it).
Dive Deep
The full changelog is huge, so here's my pick of what I think engineers will care about most.
Added
x-claude-code-prompt-idadded to the gateway hint headers, so LLM gateways can group requests serving one user prompt; opt in withCLAUDE_CODE_GATEWAY_HINT_HEADERS=1pathadded to--plugin-dirload-failure entries, naming the directory that failed to load- An opt-in
load_test_modeblock for the Claude apps gateway config: requests are built and signed but not sent upstream, with clients getting a canned reply, so deployments can be load tested - A
mantleupstream provider added to the Claude apps gateway for Amazon Bedrock's Mantle endpoint - Click-to-expand added for truncated messages from other sessions in fullscreen mode
Fixed
- SDK sessions losing a deferred tool call or finished tool result when a turn ended early
- MCP progress notifications being discarded once a long-running tool call moved to the background; the background task now shows the latest progress
- Stdio MCP servers being left running when a session ended while they were still starting
/contextnot counting MCP server instructions; they now appear as their own row and count toward the total- The PowerShell tool letting
cmd /c rd,rmdir, del, orerasedelete drive roots, the home folder, and other locations thatRemove-Itemnormally refuses (a quietly important security fix) - Managed
sandboxsettings being ignored entirely when one nested value was invalid; the invalid value now fails closed while the rest of the block still applies
Changed
- Interactive sessions on third-party providers or with telemetry off now start in auto mode by default when no permission mode is configured
- Reverted the 2.1.282 reservation of the
claude-ainame, so skills, commands, workflows, and MCP servers using that name load again
Platform-Specific Fixes
- VSCode: fixed the permission mode indicator showing Default while the session kept running in auto or bypass mode after an automatic switch failed
- Cloud Sessions: improved adding a repository to a running cloud session so a private repository you can read but not push to now attaches for reading
- Claude Tag (Slack): added a "Channels Claude can search" admin setting that limits Claude's Slack search to public channels, configurable per organization, workspace, or channel
- Code Review: fixed "@claude review" requests going silent when GitHub failed to return the pull request; the request is now retried once, with a comment explaining if it still fails
Wrap-up
- Claude Code v2.1.283 is a practical, fix-and-feature-dense release rather than one headline feature
/doctor prompt-auditlets you check your CLAUDE.md, skills, and agents for outdated prompting patternsdeniedModelsandavailableModelsMatch: "exact"give organizations tighter governance over model usageOTEL_LOG_TOOL_CONTENT=1now logs MCP tool, WebFetch, and WebSearch outputs through OpenTelemetry- A large batch of quiet-but-important fixes across MCP, SDK sessions, Vim mode, and Windows security
