What was announced?

v2.1.290 was published on the Claude Code Release page on GitHub. It's a big release with new features, behavior changes, and lots of bug fixes.

Why it matters

For people who use Claude Code every day, many changes touch command usability, permission checks, and stability in long sessions. Here are the highlights.

What changes

Additions that affect everyday use:

  • claude attach {name} and claude logs {name} accept part of a session name in place of the ID
  • WebFetch gets an offset parameter, so you can read past the 100,000 character limit
  • In Slack, !fast and !fast off switch fast mode
  • Claude Tag custom connections get an optional Path prefixes field
  • Claude Tag channel instructions now show a character count (limit 8,192)
  • /claude-api managed-agents-onboard accepts a URL or a quickstart name

Dive Deep

Additions around plugin (mod) hooks:

  • The result of the turn.step hook now includes serverToolUses (tool calls the API ran itself)
  • The tool.check event of plugin hooks now includes agentId, so a hook can tell a subagent's permission check from the main session's
  • The question and verdict a tool.check hook reads now include ceiling, naming the approval an organization requires for a tool
  • The plugin hooks typings now include ThemeKey and Color types
  • claude plugin validate lists each hook registered at a gating site and whether it has a .catch

Behavior changes to watch for:

  • CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC now skips startup warmup
  • Project settings can no longer enable Chrome (--chrome or /chrome is required)
  • pyright now requires permission (it is no longer treated as read-only)
  • Some forms of the Bash ps command now ask for approval
  • The WebSearch budget refills at 100 calls per hour instead of ending at 200
  • The minimum PostgreSQL version for the Claude apps gateway dropped from 14 to 11

The fixes cover a lot of ground:

  • Long sessions with hundreds of images getting stuck
  • Scheduled tasks not resuming after compaction, and /loop firing extra runs on resume or fork
  • Read deny rules not applying to pasted images
  • Bash permission checks missing wildcards in option values
  • Requests failing behind proxies that reject beta headers
  • WebFetch silently dropping text past 100,000 characters
