Claude Code v2.1.292 Is Out: Agent Tool Effort Setting and a New plugin install Option

Hi, it's Shii-chan! A new Claude Code release, v2.1.292, is out, so here are the highlights!

What was announced?

v2.1.292 was published as a Claude Code release on GitHub. It brings new features and a lot of fixes.

Here are the main additions!

--marketplace {source} for claude plugin install: adds the marketplace if needed, then installs the plugin from it
An effort parameter on the Agent tool, so a sub-agent runs at the effort level you ask for
The CLAUDE_CODE_OVERLOADED_RETRY_BASE_DELAY_MS environment variable, to set a longer base delay for the backoff when retrying an overloaded (529) request
A prompt.autocomplete event for mods, to add their own rows to the prompt box's autocomplete list
Prompt caching for $.model.complete in mods: cache: true on a block caches the request up to it
Workflow agents in the agent.spawn mod hook
Agent names can now be up to 256 characters
MCP protocol negotiation now defaults to version 2026-07-28

Here are some of the fixes worth noting.

Security-related:

Sandboxed commands could read staged file copies under ~/.claude/seed-admin. Fixed
On macOS and Windows, a notebook or PDF read could return a file outside what was approved through a link swapped in mid-read. Fixed
rm -rf on Windows short names was not treated as removing the home folder. Fixed
PreToolUse hook approvals could bypass permission prompts for network (UNC) paths. Fixed

Sessions and behavior:

Subagents with permissionMode: auto could enter auto mode when it was unavailable. Fixed
Plan mode was not restored when resuming sessions. Fixed
Saved scheduled tasks did not fire after /resume, /branch, or /clear. Fixed
@-mentioned text files over 256KB were silently omitted. Fixed
MCP tools with names longer than 128 characters caused request failures. Fixed

Improvements:

Faster startup for claude -p and the SDK (the first turn no longer waits for MCP resources/list)
Faster rendering of long bulleted and numbered replies
The Artifact tool listing now shows 200 items instead of 50

There are many more fixes for vim mode, the plugin and hook system, cloud sessions, Claude Tag (Slack), and code review.
