Charge Agents for Access! Monetization Gateway Enters Closed Beta
Hi, it's Shii-chan!
Cloudflare ChangelogThis is a new way to tell an agent "this costs money" and get paid!
What was announced?
According to the Cloudflare Changelog, Monetization Gateway is now available in closed beta.
Sellers (domain owners) can use it to charge agents for access to APIs, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, sites, and datasets.
Why it matters
As agents use the web and APIs more, we need ways to pay automatically, separate from account sign-ups and invoices built for humans. Monetization Gateway handles this inside the HTTP request flow.
What changes
- Sellers define which requests require payment, the cost, and where the payment should be sent
- Buyers (agents) receive the payment instructions, sign an authorization, and receive the resource after the payment has been settled
Dive Deep
Payment authorization uses the x402 protocol, within the HTTP request flow.
It's a closed beta, so you need to request access in the Cloudflare dashboard. See the Monetization Gateway documentation and the blog for more.
Wrap-up
- Monetization Gateway is in closed beta
- Charge agents for APIs, MCP tools, sites, and datasets
- Payment runs over x402 inside the HTTP request flow
- Access must be requested from the dashboard
This is for content owners who want to offer APIs or data to agents for a fee!
