Australian Universities Are Raising AI-Native Graduates: ChatGPT Edu Spreads Across 4 Campuses
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today I read about Australian universities rolling out ChatGPT to their students and staff, and I want to share what's going on.
OpenAI NewsWhat was announced?
In OpenAI News, four universities were highlighted: UNSW Sydney, University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Adelaide University. They are working with OpenAI to give students and staff access to frontier AI tools.
The post also shares results of a survey commissioned by OpenAI. Pureprofile surveyed 1,018 Australian university students from August 3 to 7, 2026.
Why it matters
The survey shows AI is already part of everyday student life.
- 81% use AI several times a week (33% use it multiple times a day)
- 28% have already built an AI agent or assistant for their studies, work or personal life
- 61% believe AI skills will be essential to success in their chosen career
- 69% believe AI literacy will become as fundamental as digital literacy, writing or numeracy
- 79% want their university to offer more chances to use advanced AI tools on real-world projects
The post argues that because students already use AI, universities should give everyone equitable access along with guidance on how to use it.
What changes
Here is what each university is doing.
- UNSW: ChatGPT Edu is rolling out in stages to more than 80,000 students and staff. Generative AI foundations and Codex will be built into courses, with hackathons and industry projects.
- University of Sydney: ChatGPT Edu with training and guidance. After a trial, access for all students is scheduled for Semester 1, 2027. A $1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund is also being set up.
- La Trobe University: All 3,500 staff already have ChatGPT Edu, and universal access for 45,000 students and staff is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
- Adelaide University: As a newly created university, it aims to embed secure, governed AI use from the start.
For students, that means trying AI without paying for tools themselves, plus more paths into coursework and internships.
Dive Deep
The post includes plenty of concrete examples.
- La Trobe Paramedicine uses ChatGPT to create practice activities in the learning management system, such as interpreting an ECG, assessing a possible heart attack or triaging patients after a mass casualty incident.
- La Trobe's School of Education uses a social robot called Fletch so future teachers can practice giving feedback to parents. It runs on OpenAI large language models hosted through Microsoft Azure and responds with speech, facial expressions and head movements. Trainees can even practice conversations that turn confrontational.
- La Trobe has made Codex and ChatGPT Work available across the institution, and will launch Australia's first Bachelor of AI Engineering (Honours) in 2027, plus an AI MBA.
- La Trobe's AI Business Studio aims to give more than 1,000 students experience as consultants and forward deployed engineers, helping small and medium enterprises adopt AI by 2028.
- On the operations side, La Trobe reports dozens of live use cases, training for hundreds of people and 10% month-on-month growth in active users.
- Adelaide University is one of the first in higher education to use OpenAI Daybreak Blue for authorised defensive security work: vulnerability discovery, secure code review, malware analysis, incident response and patch validation.
Universities are also setting rules for when AI is appropriate.
- UNSW's "Can, Can't, Must" framework: for each assessment, AI use can be permitted, prohibited or required.
- University of Sydney: students show their own capabilities in supervised settings, then show how they use AI effectively in open assessments.
- La Trobe: free Responsible and Safe AI learning modules for all students, and AI skills development in 50 priority first-year subjects in Semester 1, 2027.
Wrap-up
- Four Australian universities are working with OpenAI to roll out ChatGPT Edu and related tools to students and staff.
- In the survey, 81% of students use AI several times a week and 79% want more real-world AI projects.
- AI is already built into teaching, from clinical simulations to robot-assisted teacher training.
- Clear rules on when to use AI and when not to are being developed alongside the rollout.
This one is for educators, university IT teams and students thinking about how to work with AI!
