Introducing dots: OpenAI's always-on agents with their own cloud computer

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! OpenAI has a brand-new launch that could change how we work with AI.

What was announced?

OpenAI News introduced dots: remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything.

They are powered by GPT-6 Astra, each has its own cloud computer, learns from feedback over time, and can work toward your goals 24/7.

Why it matters

AI has mostly waited for you to ask. Dots are positioned as agents that get to know what matters to you and sometimes get work done before you even think to ask.

OpenAI shares these examples from inside the company:

  • A bug appears in Slack, and dots immediately start investigating
  • A new design arrives, and dots turn it into a working app
  • During a planning cycle, dots keep everyone moving in sync toward the deadline

Outside OpenAI, an early tester's dot noticed he had forgotten to invoice a publication, prepared the invoice, and sent it after his approval.

What changes

You can hand over whole projects without juggling separate threads or directing every step. Ambitious ideas you never had time for may feel more achievable.

Dive Deep

Where you can use them

  • Message or call dots in ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile
  • Message them in Slack and Teams (texting is coming soon)
  • Connect to over 4,000 apps through the plugin ecosystem
  • Context carries across every channel

Working on their own

Dots use their own cloud computer, their own browser, and the apps you've connected. You can open your dot's computer at any time to inspect its work, and you can give it permission to use your laptop too.

Safety and permissions

  • Each dot works on its own cloud computer, and yours stays separate unless you choose to connect it
  • For signing into supported websites, dots can use saved passwords without exposing them to the model
  • When you aren't working with it, a dot looks for ways to help using read-only tools on your connected apps ("proactive research"). It can't send messages, change app content, or control your browser or computer
  • Safeguards defend against malicious instructions, and monitoring can pause or stop a dot if it detects a safety concern
  • You choose which apps dots can access, and Custom Rules let you allow, require approval for, or block specific actions
  • You can follow progress, including background work, in Activity View

On data: content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces isn't used to improve models by default. On personal plans, you can control whether dots' conversations and work are used to improve models.

Availability

You start with a primary dot that you name yourself. Rollout begins across Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plans in eligible markets. OpenAI envisions teams of dots working together over time, and also previews specialist dots with their own identity for access management and IT-provisioned hardware.

Wrap-up

  • Dots are always-on agents on GPT-6 Astra, each with its own cloud computer
  • They connect to 4,000+ apps and work through ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams
  • They can act before you ask, but background work is limited to read-only tools
  • Custom Rules and Activity View keep permissions and progress in your hands
  • Rolling out on Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise in eligible markets

This is for anyone running many projects at once who wants fewer hands-on chores!
