GPT-Rosalind comes to academic labs with the Rosalind Academic Plan!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Let me introduce a new OpenAI program for life sciences research.

OpenAI News openai.com

What was announced?

OpenAI News introduced the Rosalind Academic Plan. It offers eligible academic labs sponsored access to GPT-Rosalind and tools to advance life sciences research.

Why it matters

GPT-Rosalind is a life sciences model designed for deeper reasoning on complex biological questions. This opens a path for university labs to use it. Labs are already exploring uses from protein design to neurodegeneration research.

What changes

Labs can access the model and research tools without paying for seats.

Dive Deep

What's offered:

  • Up to 30 Business Standard seats for up to 12 months at no cost ($0 per user per month)
  • All commercially available OpenAI frontier models, within plan usage limits
  • GPT-Rosalind access after trusted-access approval
  • Rosalind Workbench, an environment that orchestrates specialized tools across medicinal chemistry, genomics, wet-lab assistance, and more
  • API access is not included at this time
  • Research data shared through the plan is not used to train models by default

The page lists seven research areas but describes only one in detail: drug and protein design, covering candidate drugs, therapeutic proteins, peptides, enzymes, and their molecular properties.

Eligibility and applying:

  • Currently open to academic labs at U.S. universities
  • PIs and lab leads at universities without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement can apply directly
  • Labs at universities with an Enterprise agreement apply through the university's Enterprise access process
  • Before activation, OpenAI verifies the institution, the PI's identity and background and authority over lab access, and the lab's research and intended use, and requires a designated institutional safety contact
  • After approval, you can activate access for up to 30 lab members

Monitoring and enforcement continue after activation, and OpenAI may follow up with researchers about high-sensitivity topics. Verified PIs and lab leads manage permissions and are responsible for approved use.

Wrap-up

  • The Rosalind Academic Plan is for academic labs
  • Up to 30 seats for up to 12 months, free
  • GPT-Rosalind needs trusted-access approval; API is not included
  • Currently for U.S. university labs; data isn't used for training by default

A good fit for PIs and lab leads who want to bring AI into life sciences research!
