ChatGPT for Clinicians Is Here, Free for Verified U.S. Clinicians!

Hi everyone, it's me, Shii-chan! Today I've got a warm little piece of news for the clinicians out there. AI is stepping right up to the clinical bedside, and I'm excited about it!

What was announced?

From OpenAI's News, meet ChatGPT for Clinicians, a version of ChatGPT built to support clinical tasks like documentation and medical research, so clinicians can focus more on delivering patient care.

The best part: it's free for any verified physician, NP, PA, or pharmacist, starting in the U.S. Opening it up to individual clinicians for free is the real headline here.

Alongside it, OpenAI also released HealthBench Professional, an open benchmark that measures performance and safety on real clinician chat tasks. It builds on the earlier HealthBench and covers three use cases: care consult, writing and documentation, and medical research.

Why it matters

The U.S. healthcare system is under real strain right now. Clinicians are asked to care for more patients while juggling growing administrative work and an ever-expanding body of medical research. So many are already leaning on AI tools like ChatGPT.

According to the 2026 American Medical Association survey the post cites, physician use of AI is at an all-time high: 72% say they now use AI in clinical practice, up from 48% last year. Clinician usage of ChatGPT itself has more than doubled over the past year.

What changes

Earlier this year, ChatGPT for Healthcare arrived for organizations, letting health systems and researchers deploy ChatGPT with the compliance and controls they need. ChatGPT for Clinicians takes that further by putting a free version into the hands of individual clinicians.

Here's how one physician described it:

This version of ChatGPT is as close to an ideal clinical support partner as it gets. It's like an on-demand consultant I can engage on everything from current guidelines to billing and coding.

The biggest win is getting time back from paperwork and returning it to patient care.

Dive Deep

Here's what's inside ChatGPT for Clinicians:

  • Advanced models for complex clinical questions: free access to OpenAI's frontier models for healthcare use cases.
  • Skills for repeatable workflows: turn common tasks like referral letters, prior auth, and patient instructions into reusable skills that follow the same steps every time.
  • Trusted clinical search: real-time, cited answers grounded in millions of reputable, peer-reviewed medical sources.
  • Deep research across medical journals: hand off literature reviews, set the sources you trust, and get a well-cited report in minutes.
  • CME from real clinical questions: eligible evidence review during your research can automatically count toward continuing medical education credits, with no separate courses or extra paperwork.
  • Optional HIPAA support: many tasks don't need PHI, but when they do, HIPAA support is available through a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for eligible accounts.
  • Account security and privacy: conversations aren't used to train models, plus protections like multi-factor authentication.

The safety work is thorough. OpenAI's physician advisors have reviewed more than 700,000 model responses so far, with a new response checked by a physician every few minutes. Before release, advisors tested 6,924 conversations in their daily work, and physicians rated 99.6% of responses as safe and accurate. On a subset of 355 examples where three independent physicians each specified ground-truth citations, ChatGPT for Clinicians cited those sources more often than human physicians did. Even so, it's designed to support clinicians with information, not replace their judgment or expertise.

HealthBench Professional is deliberately hard, too. About a third of examples come from physicians red teaming the models, and the dataset selects for the toughest conversations by a factor of 3.5x. Even under those conditions, GPT-5.4 in the ChatGPT for Clinicians workspace outperformed base GPT-5.4, all other OpenAI and external models, and human physicians who had unbounded time and web access. You can download the benchmark as a dataset.

Wrap-up

Let me pull it together:

  • ChatGPT for Clinicians launched, a ChatGPT built for clinical tasks, free to start for verified U.S. physicians, NPs, PAs, and pharmacists.
  • It packs clinical search, deep research, skills, CME, and optional HIPAA support to fit real clinical work.
  • On the open HealthBench Professional benchmark, GPT-5.4 in the workspace even outperformed human physicians.
  • OpenAI plans to expand beyond the U.S. over time, starting with the Better Evidence Network, and also published a Health Blueprint with recommendations for responsibly integrating AI into healthcare.

This lands first for U.S. clinicians buried in paperwork, and it's a worthwhile read for anyone thinking about how AI fits into healthcare, or engineers curious about health benchmarks!
