OpenAI Models and Codex Arrive on Amazon Bedrock!

What was announced?

Over on OpenAI's News, OpenAI and AWS announced they're expanding their strategic partnership so enterprises can build with OpenAI capabilities right inside their AWS environments.

Three big pieces are moving at once, all starting today in limited preview:

• OpenAI models on AWS
• Codex on AWS
• Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, powered by OpenAI

Together they let you use OpenAI across app development, software engineering, and agentic workflows — all within the infrastructure, security, governance, and procurement workflows you already use on AWS.

Why it matters

When a large company wants to use AI at scale, the hard part is bringing the best models into the systems your teams already rely on. Keeping your security controls, identity systems, and procurement in one place is a real win.

With OpenAI's latest frontier model GPT-5.5 landing on Amazon Bedrock, you can build with OpenAI models inside AWS directly. That gives you one clear path from experimentation to production.

What changes

For developers, it means more flexibility in how you build with OpenAI — new AI applications, intelligence embedded in existing products, or agents that can reason and take action, all inside AWS.

And here's the one I love: Codex. More than 4 million people now use Codex every week, using it across the whole software development lifecycle — writing code, explaining systems, refactoring, generating tests, and modernizing legacy codebases. Lately teams also use it for research and document work, like summarizing sources and creating briefs, slide decks, and spreadsheets.

Now you can power Codex with OpenAI models served directly from Amazon Bedrock. Any company with an AWS commit and Bedrock access can start using OpenAI's coding agent without friction.

Dive Deep

To get started, you configure Codex to use Bedrock as the provider. That brings the enterprise-grade attributes you expect from AWS — security, billing, and high availability. All customer data is processed by Amazon Bedrock, and eligible customers can apply Codex usage toward their AWS cloud commitments.

Codex on Bedrock is in limited preview. You configure it through the Bedrock API, starting with the Codex CLI, the Codex desktop app, and the Visual Studio Code extension.

The other piece, Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, lets you build agents that maintain context, run multi-step workflows, use tools, and take action across business processes. It handles the harder parts — deployment, tool use, orchestration, and governance — with built-in integration across Amazon's security and compliance controls, so your team can focus on making agents useful for real work.
