Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today I've got a big one about the physical foundations of AI getting real. It's a data center story, and the numbers are so huge I got a little giddy.

What was announced?

This one comes from OpenAI's News. OpenAI broke ground on The Barn, a 1 GW data center campus in Saline, Michigan. They did it alongside Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, local community and labor leaders, and partners Oracle, Related Digital, and Walbridge.

The Barn is part of OpenAI's Stargate program, a long-term effort to build the infrastructure that makes intelligence more accessible, useful, and reliable. Stargate launched back in January 2025.

Why it matters

AI doesn't run on software alone. It needs energy, construction, supply chains, advanced systems, and the skilled people who build and operate them. OpenAI's view is that compute is becoming one of the real strategic advantages in AI: more compute supports better models, and better infrastructure brings down the cost of delivering AI to more people.

So where and how you build big infrastructure like this really matters. What stands out here is that OpenAI is putting building it in partnership with the community front and center.

What changes

OpenAI is making a clear set of commitments to the local community:

  • No cost to local ratepayers: the infrastructure and energy for The Barn will be paid for by the project, not passed on to local ratepayers. They say consumers will be protected from higher electricity bills because of this project.
  • Protecting local water: a closed-loop cooling system that uses about as much water as a typical office building.
  • Local jobs: more than 2,500 union construction jobs, plus 450 permanent onsite jobs, 1,500 county-wide jobs, and another 1,000 indirect jobs.
  • Investing in the community: OpenAI is teaming up with Related Digital, Oracle, Walbridge, and Blackstone to contribute $10 million toward improvements to the Saline Recreation Center. The project is also projected to generate $1 billion in tax revenue over the lease term, supporting local, county, and state schools and services.

Dive Deep

My favorite part is the support for students! During the 2026-2027 academic year, OpenAI will make up to $45 million in Codex credits available to more than 400,000 eligible Michigan college, community college, and trade school students aged 18 and older. Eligible students can sign up from that page.

OpenAI is also partnering with Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and participating community colleges on AI literacy and workforce training focused on practical, job-relevant skills.

On the labor side, earlier this year OpenAI announced a broad partnership with North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU), aimed at making sure the construction of AI infrastructure supports union careers and apprenticeship programs. Michigan helped drive American industrialization in the 20th century, so this ties into a story of reindustrialization too.
