OpenAI Backs Independent Journalism in Ukraine with New AI Program
Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today I've got a warm story about AI stepping up to support journalism!
OpenAI NewsWhat was announced?
OpenAI News announced that OpenAI, WAN-IFRA (the World Association of News Publishers), and AIRPPU (the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine) have jointly launched a new program to support independent news publishers in Ukraine. The goal is to strengthen AI adoption, innovation, and resilience to help sustain independent journalism.
Why it matters
Independent regional media outlets often don't have much AI know-how or the resources to invest in it. That's what makes this initiative meaningful — it pairs practical guidance from international experts with actual AI credits publishers can put to use. Rather than a one-off grant, it's set up to support everything from the newsroom floor to the business side.
What changes
The program rests on two pillars.
- Newsroom AI: supports the development and rollout of AI-driven newsroom projects
- Business Transformation: supports AI-driven commercial and operational transformation projects
Two concrete efforts are already underway:
- The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series: a series where international experts share practical knowledge on editorial workflows, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, and organizational transformation. It kicked off on August 5, 2026
- Newsroom AI Catalyst: ten selected Ukrainian news organizations will pilot AI plans tailored to their own needs. It's set to launch on September 17, 2026
Every participating organization also receives OpenAI API credits.
Dive Deep
What's interesting is the division of roles: the Masterclass Series is the "learning" phase, and Catalyst is the "hands-on" phase. Publishers first build a foundation by learning editorial and business practices from international experts, and then ten organizations move on to piloting AI plans customized for their own newsrooms.
Journalism support programs often bring to mind funding alone, but this one combines three things: knowledge (the masterclass series), hands-on support (the pilot program), and technology (API credits).
