Hi, it's Shii-chan! Today we have an update about ChatGPT for teens.

What was announced?

OpenAI News shared early results from ChatGPT for Teens, plus new learning and planning support.

  • College Planner (coming soon)
  • Flashcards and quizzes
  • Continuous multi-photo capture
  • A teen AI council that gathers input from young people

Why it matters

We now have results on how the default experience for accounts identified as under 18 is used for learning and everyday problem-solving. Here are the numbers from the post.

  • Teens with access sent about 2.7 million more learning-related messages on average than those without it
  • In one week, nearly 1.2 million teens used Learning Visualizations for math and science, and more than 180,000 used Study Mode
  • Teens average under 15 minutes a day, and fewer than 2% spend more than three consecutive hours in a session
  • In almost half of conversations with a break reminder, teens took a break or ended the conversation within five minutes

OpenAI also compares this with the publicly reported 5-hour daily average for teen social media use.

What changes

Hundreds of thousands of US teens use ChatGPT weekly for college planning, including applications, deadlines, school research, and financial aid. College Planner combines application requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial-aid steps for each school on a student's list into one plan, and lets students track progress. OpenAI says it is meant to ease the practical workload, not to decide where students should apply.

Dive Deep

The first launch targets US students in grades 10 to 12 planning to attend a four-year college. OpenAI plans to expand to more countries and to two-year colleges, technical colleges, and trade schools. Financial aid support covers understanding requirements, tracking deadlines, and finding scholarships and fee waivers.

New study tools:

  • Continuous multi-photo capture: combine multiple note pages into one PDF for upload (iOS now, Android in progress)
  • Flashcards: generate them from notes or a topic, mark known cards, and shuffle. Decks save to the Library and can be scheduled for practice
  • Quizzes: build them from uploaded notes, and ChatGPT now recognizes more reliably when you want one

Other efforts:

  • Support for the College Advising Corps, which places advisers in under-resourced high schools, to expand into new states and launch an AI fellowship
  • Three years of support for Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab and its Student Advisory Council. For 2026-27, about 22 students join: about 12 aged 14-18 on community digital wellbeing, and about 10 aged 16-20 on AI chatbots and emerging technology
