Claude Gets a 40% Government Discount in Expanded GSA Partnership

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan!

Anthropic News anthropic.com

Today's news is about Claude and government agencies. There are lots of numbers, so let's go through them one by one.

What was announced?

Anthropic News announced a new agreement expanding its partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

Government buyers get a 40% discount on:

  • Claude Enterprise
  • Claude for Government
  • Claude API

The discount covers every product surface, for direct purchases from Anthropic and, in the coming months, through cloud providers. It also extends to state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) governments.

Why it matters

About 500 U.S. federal, state, and local government organizations already use Claude.

  • Weekly active users of Claude for Government have grown about eightfold since February
  • Usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about 20-fold in one year

This agreement makes the terms easier still for government buyers.

What changes

  • No minimum spend commitment; agencies pay only for what they use
  • Agencies can buy at the OneGov discount through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule starting now
  • The discount is estimated to save the government $1 billion
  • A dedicated program will help agencies implement Claude, bringing best practices from private-sector customers to public-sector partners in the coming weeks

Dive Deep

Here is the authorization picture from the post:

  • Claude for Government: generally available since September 30, with near-feature parity with commercial offerings at FedRAMP High, usable for sensitive unclassified work
  • Amazon Bedrock: Claude is FedRAMP High authorized, and select models are authorized for DoD IL4 and IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud
  • Google Cloud Vertex AI: Claude is FedRAMP High authorized
  • Claude Enterprise: in process for FedRAMP Moderate through the FedRAMP 20x program

The post also shares concrete examples:

  • Utah: 34 developers across 10 state agencies ran a four-week Claude Code pilot. 80% had a working environment within 30 minutes, and 71% reported saving 20+ hours
  • A state IT developer: moved nearly 900 API methods to a new framework in two days, previously scoped at one month
  • A state IT director: documented 12 legacy code repositories, mapped 467 database tables, and flagged 27 risks
  • A state CIO's team: responded to a ransomware attack in 8 minutes, versus the usual 2-3 days
  • A federal security team: used Claude Mythos to find and patch a vulnerability that could have allowed takeover of a critical production system, in about two days. A human penetration test the previous month had missed it
