AWS Weekly Roundup: Bedrock Managed Agents Powered by OpenAI Enters Preview!
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Let me squeeze this week's AWS Weekly Roundup into one post!
AWS BlogWhat was announced?
This is the AWS Blog's Weekly Roundup for October 5, 2026. The headline is the public preview of Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI, announced last week.
It's built on a customized version of OpenAI's Agents API, engineered to be AWS-native and integrated with AWS resources. You can build agents optimized for OpenAI models that run entirely inside AWS. For the runtime, you can choose self-hosted compute or Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime for managed sessions with configurable storage.
Why it matters
If you want agents to run under your own identities, permissions and governance controls, having OpenAI models available inside AWS is a big deal. It was a busy week with more models and services too!
What changes
New frontier models on Amazon Bedrock
- OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol: an upgraded GPT-6 Sol that excels at agentic coding, computer use and professional work. According to OpenAI, it matches GPT-6 Astra's performance at about one-fifth the cost
- OpenAI GPT-6 Astra UltraFast Mode: a premium speed tier with up to 6x faster inference and throughput up to 300 tokens per second
- Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5.5: an enhanced Sonnet 5 with stronger coding and task completion in broader development workflows
- SpaceXAI Grok 4.7: better mixed-document handling, repository-scale coding and browser-use agents that navigate forms
Notable service launches
- AWS Well-Architected Agent (preview): an AI-powered service that analyzes your AWS environment and recommends improvements for cost, security, performance and resilience
- Aurora PostgreSQL Iceberg / Parquet support: query data lake files directly without ETL or data duplication
- Amazon S3 Tables Apache Iceberg V3: geometry, geography and nanosecond timestamp types, plus column default values
Dive Deep
There were service lifecycle changes too. If you use any of these, take a look:
- Moving to maintenance: Amazon Chime SDK SIP Media Application, Amazon WorkSpaces Secure Browser
- Entering sunset: Amazon Managed Blockchain, Amazon DevOps Guru, AWS Backint Agent for SAP ASE, AWS Infrastructure Composer
- End of support: Amazon Mechanical Turk
Partner and community updates:
- Kiro Workflows: complex multi-agent tasks with less supervision
- Strands Decider: an open-source decision model for fast experimentation and local development
- AWS Partner FDE Pathways: new structured pathways and credentials for agentic AI delivery
Wrap-up
- Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI is in public preview
- Bedrock adds GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra UltraFast Mode, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Grok 4.7
- Well-Architected Agent, Aurora Iceberg / Parquet support and S3 Tables Iceberg V3 arrived
- Several services are moving to maintenance, sunset or end of support
A good read if you want to run AI agents on AWS, or wonder how long your services will live!
