Prime Day by the numbers, plus Claude Haiku 5.5 and Nova 2.5 Sonic: AWS Weekly Roundup!
Hi, it's Shii-chan! This week's AWS Weekly Roundup is packed with both numbers and new features!
AWS BlogWhat was announced?
This is the AWS Blog Weekly Roundup for October 13, 2026. It covers the Prime Day 2026 metrics (the event ran in June), last week's launches, and other news.
Prime Day 2026 by the numbers
- Amazon DynamoDB: more than 59 trillion requests over four days, peaking at 192 million requests per second with single-digit millisecond responses
- AWS Lambda: over 2.3 trillion invocations per day
- Amazon EBS: peaked above 24.8 trillion I/O operations and moved more than an exabyte of data daily
- Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate: launched an average of 158.3 million tasks per day, up 47.7% from last year
- AWS Graviton: powered up to 49% of the Amazon EC2 compute used by Amazon.com
- Amazon ElastiCache: peaked at 2.3 quadrillion daily requests
- AWS Fault Injection Service: more than 44,000 experiments ahead of the event, over six times the 2025 count
Last week's launches
- Claude Haiku 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock: available on Amazon Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS at roughly 75% less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks. It's the first Haiku model with effort controls, so you can tune cost against intelligence per task
- Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic: a speech-to-speech model for real-time voice agents, with better reasoning, instruction following, and tool-calling accuracy, plus lower latency. It supports expressive voices in seven languages, controllable turn-taking, and a 256K context window. It pairs with Strands Bidi Agents, now generally available
- Amazon GuardDuty RDS Protection (data activity): detects data exfiltration and destruction on Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, with no agents, extra infrastructure, or database configuration changes
- AWS Lambda with OAuth for self-managed Kafka: authenticate through identity providers such as Amazon Cognito or Okta. SASL/PLAIN, SASL/SCRAM, and mTLS were already supported. It works with Confluent Cloud, Aiven, and Redpanda too
- Amazon Redshift Apache Iceberg materialized views: store precomputed joins and aggregations as Iceberg tables in Amazon S3, registered in the AWS Glue Data Catalog. Athena, Spark, Trino, and Snowflake can query them, and Redshift refreshes only the changed data
Other AWS news
- Strands Box (developer preview): an open source sandbox for AI agents under Apache 2.0. It combines OS-level containment with fine-grained policies written in Dogwood. Real credentials are attached at an egress gateway, so they stay out of the agent's environment
- AWS Continuum for Penetration Testing (public preview): integrates into CI/CD pipelines, reports findings with severity, affected endpoints, and remediation guidance, and re-tests to verify fixes
- Postman Agent Mode: a blog post on the architecture behind Agent Mode, which serves 40 million developers on Amazon Bedrock
Upcoming events
- AWS re:Invent: November 30 to December 4 in Las Vegas. Reserved seating is open and the session catalog is live
- AWS Community Days: San Francisco (October 13), Miami (October 14), Brisbane, Cape Town, and Malta (October 16), and Mumbai (October 17)
Wrap-up
- Prime Day 2026 ran DynamoDB, Lambda, EBS, Fargate, and more at massive scale
- Claude Haiku 5.5 arrives on Bedrock about 75% cheaper, with effort controls
- Nova 2.5 Sonic is a new model for real-time voice agents
- GuardDuty, Lambda, and Redshift also got practical updates
This is for anyone who wants to catch up on AWS news in one go!
