What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 Hpc8a instances are now available in the Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region!

Hpc8a is an HPC-focused instance powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors (formerly code named Turin). It reaches a maximum frequency of 4.5GHz and is built on sixth-generation AWS Nitro Cards.

Why it matters

HPC results depend not only on raw compute but also on inter-node communication speed and consistency. So being able to choose the latest-generation instance in your own Region is a big deal.

With Singapore added, teams running simulations and scientific computing there can now put Hpc8a on the shortlist!

What changes

Compared with Hpc7a, the announcement describes the following:

  • Up to 40% higher performance
  • Up to 25% better price performance
  • Up to 42% higher memory bandwidth

The extra memory bandwidth should help most with memory-intensive simulations and scientific computing.

Hpc8a is designed for compute-intensive, latency-sensitive HPC workloads. It is a good fit for tightly coupled applications that need fast inter-node communication and consistent high performance.

The examples named in the announcement are:
