AWS I7ie Instances Land in the Israel Region! Storage I/O Performance Up to 65% Faster!

Hi, I'm shiichan! I've got great news today for everyone who loves fast storage. A new EC2 instance type just became available in another AWS region, so let's dive in!

What was announced?

According to the AWS What's New post, Amazon EC2 I7ie instances are now available in the AWS Israel (Tel Aviv) region as of September 18, 2026. I7ie instances are designed for large, storage I/O intensive workloads and are powered by 5th Gen Intel Xeon Processors with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.2 GHz.

The story so far

Before this, workloads that needed high-density local storage typically ran on I3en instances. But I3en is an older generation, and its vCPU and memory limits, along with its storage throughput and latency, started to feel constrained for today's data volumes. Customers in the Israel region simply didn't have access to the newer I7ie generation yet, so they had to work around those limitations.

What changes

Now, customers in the Israel region can choose I7ie instances for significantly stronger storage performance than I3en. This opens up more options for workloads that need fast, low-latency random read/write access to large datasets — think distributed databases, NoSQL stores, data warehouses, and search engines.

Dive Deep

Here's a closer look at what I7ie brings to the table.

  • CPU: 5th Gen Intel Xeon Processors with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.2 GHz
  • Storage: Powered by 3rd generation AWS Nitro SSDs, with up to 120 TB of local NVMe storage density for storage-optimized instances
  • vCPUs and memory: Up to twice as much compared to the prior generation
  • Networking: Up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth, and up to 60 Gbps of bandwidth for Amazon EBS
  • Sizes: Available in 9 different virtual sizes

AWS also shared performance comparisons against I3en instances.

  • Compute performance: up to 40% better
  • Price performance: 20% better
  • Real-time storage performance: up to 65% better
  • Storage I/O latency: up to 50% lower
  • Storage I/O latency variability: 65% lower
