Amazon ECS deployments are now fully visible, in real time!

Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! I found some great news for everyone running workloads on ECS today: you can now watch your deployments happen in real time, right inside the AWS Management Console!

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon ECS has added real-time service deployment observability to the Amazon ECS Console. It supports native Linear, Canary, and Blue/Green deployment strategies, bringing deployment monitoring and troubleshooting together in one place instead of spreading them across separate tools.

The story so far

Until now, tracking a deployment's progress meant checking multiple tools separately: traffic-shift progress here, task launch and termination status there, circuit breaker state somewhere else. When something went wrong, figuring out the root cause took extra digging across all of those places.

What changes

Now you can just open the ECS Console and see the whole deployment as a live timeline: each deployment phase, service events, task launch and termination progress, traffic shift distribution, and the current lifecycle stage, all in one view. That "wait, how's my deployment doing?" anxiety should ease up a lot for engineers running deployments!

Dive Deep

Alongside the timeline, ECS also shows deployment health signals together:

  • Circuit breaker status, with live task failure and threshold tracking
  • Deployment alarm state
  • Container and load balancer health checks
  • Lifecycle hook status

Failed tasks show up right in the timeline with diagnostic context, plus deep links to AWS CloudTrail, so you can dig into the cause without leaving the console. It's available across all AWS commercial Regions and AWS GovCloud (US), at no additional charge.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon ECS Console now has real-time observability for Linear, Canary, and Blue/Green deployments
  • You get the deployment timeline, service events, and traffic shift progress in one screen
  • Circuit breaker and health check status are shown together, with CloudTrail deep links for failed tasks
  • Available in all commercial Regions plus GovCloud (US), at no extra charge

This one's especially useful for engineers who manage ECS deployments day to day!
