Amazon GameLift Servers Expands to 5 New Regions and 8 Local Zones!

Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Here's a region-expansion update for everyone building multiplayer games!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

This is from AWS What's New. Amazon GameLift Servers, the fully managed service for deploying, operating, and scaling dedicated game servers for multiplayer games, is now available in 5 new AWS Regions and 8 new AWS Local Zones.

Why it matters

High latency caused by the geographic distance between players and servers is one of the most common challenges in multiplayer game development. The farther a server is from its players, the more that input lag and delay stand out. This expansion is aimed squarely at that problem.

What changes

Here's where GameLift Servers is now available.

  • New Regions (5): il-central-1 (Tel Aviv), mx-central-1 (Mexico/Queretaro), eu-south-2 (Spain/Zaragoza), ap-south-2 (Hyderabad), and ap-southeast-3 (Jakarta)
  • New Local Zones (8): us-east-1-atl-2 (Atlanta), us-east-1-chi-2 (Chicago), us-east-1-iah-2 (Houston), us-east-1-mia-2 (Miami), us-west-2-phx-2 (Phoenix), sa-east-1-bue-1 (Buenos Aires), us-east-1-nyc-2 (New York), and sa-east-1-lim-1 (Lima)

With this expansion, you can deploy game server fleets closer to players across Latin America, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. Closing that distance gap should mean lower latency and a more responsive game.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon GameLift Servers is now available in 5 new Regions and 8 new Local Zones
  • The new locations span Latin America, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia
  • The goal is to shrink the distance between players and servers to reduce latency
  • Good news for teams running multiplayer games with a global player base!
