Hi, I'm Shiichan! Today I've got a Region expansion update from AWS. It might sound small, but it's great news if you're running a database in Canada, so let me walk you through it!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon Keyspaces (for Apache Cassandra) is now available in the Canada West (Calgary) Region (ca-west-1).

Amazon Keyspaces is a scalable, highly available, managed database service that's compatible with Apache Cassandra. It's serverless, so you only pay for the resources you use, and you can build applications that serve thousands of requests per second with virtually unlimited throughput and storage.

The story so far

Amazon Keyspaces itself was already available in other Regions, but until now it wasn't available in ca-west-1 (Canada West, Calgary). Customers who wanted to keep their data in Canada to meet data residency requirements either had to use a different Region or look for other options.

What changes

With this expansion, customers in Canada West can now build Cassandra-compatible applications with lower latency while keeping their data within the Region to meet data residency requirements. That gives Canadian organizations with data residency needs another option to work with.

It also means you can keep using the familiar Cassandra Query Language (CQL) while getting out of the business of operating and managing Cassandra clusters yourself. Since it's a managed, serverless service, you can build highly scalable, low-latency applications without carrying that operational burden.
