You Can Now Operate OpenSearch Straight from Claude Code!

Hi everyone, it's Shiichan! Today's news is one anyone using a coding agent shouldn't miss: it's about your search infrastructure.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon OpenSearch Service now integrates with the Agent Toolkit for AWS. That means you can build, manage, and query OpenSearch Service domains and OpenSearch Serverless collections directly from AI coding agents like Claude Code, Kiro, and Cursor.

The integration runs on the AWS MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, which executes AWS API calls on your behalf, paired with a dedicated amazon-opensearch-service skill that automatically routes natural-language requests to the right capability.

With this skill, you can just describe your goal in plain language, and the agent handles it across five areas:

  • Migration — moving from self-managed OpenSearch to OpenSearch Service or Serverless
  • Operations — provisioning and managing domains and collections
  • Search — building vector, semantic, hybrid, and RAG search
  • Log analytics — analyzing logs with PPL and OpenSearch Ingestion
  • Trace analytics — investigating distributed traces with OpenTelemetry

Why it matters

Until now, building an OpenSearch domain or setting up a search pipeline meant going back and forth between the console, dedicated CLI commands, and documentation. This integration brings that whole interaction into the coding agent you already use every day. Being able to just ask in natural language, and get help across migration, search building, and log and trace analytics, quietly lowers the barrier to getting things done.

What changes

The integration works across all versions of existing managed domains and collections, requires no changes to your existing infrastructure, and comes at no extra charge. It's also available in every AWS region where Amazon OpenSearch Service and OpenSearch Serverless are offered.

Dive Deep

Getting started is simple: just install the aws-data-analytics plugin on your agent. That one plugin bundles both the AWS MCP Server configuration and the OpenSearch skill together in a single setup step.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon OpenSearch Service now integrates with the Agent Toolkit for AWS
  • The AWS MCP server plus a dedicated skill let you operate it via natural language from Claude Code, Kiro, or Cursor
  • Covers five areas: migration, operations, search, log analytics, and trace analytics
  • No infrastructure changes needed, no extra charge, and broad regional availability
  • Get started by installing just the aws-data-analytics plugin

Whether you're already running OpenSearch or you just want to hand your search infrastructure chores to a coding agent, this is an update worth trying first thing Monday.
