Amazon Redshift's RG Instances Get rg.large and rg.12xlarge in AWS GovCloud!

Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today's update is about Amazon Redshift's instance lineup — GovCloud users now have more size options to choose from!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, Amazon Redshift's RG instances now offer two additional sizes, rg.large and rg.12xlarge, in the AWS GovCloud (US-West) and AWS GovCloud (US-East) Regions. That completes the full four-size lineup there — rg.large, rg.xlarge, rg.4xlarge, and rg.12xlarge are all now available.

RG instances come with Redshift's own custom-built vectorized data lake query engine, which processes Apache Iceberg and Parquet data directly on the cluster nodes. That lets you run SQL analytics across both your data warehouse and your data lake using a single engine.

The story so far

RG instances already existed, but these two sizes hadn't been available in GovCloud Regions until now. Teams that need to use GovCloud for compliance reasons, such as government workloads, had a narrower set of instance sizes to pick from.

What changes

With this addition, teams running in GovCloud can now choose from the full RG instance lineup, from small to large. It also gives them more flexibility when planning a migration path away from previous-generation RA3 instances.

Dive Deep

According to the announcement, RG instances offer the following advantages over previous-generation RA3 instances:

  • Up to 2.4x faster for data warehouse and data lake workloads
  • 30% lower price per vCPU

They require patch version P202 or later. Two migration paths are available:

  • Existing RG or RA3 clusters can be resized to the new instance sizes using Elastic Resize or Classic Resize
  • Existing RA3 clusters can be upgraded to RG using Snapshot & Restore

Pricing options include On-Demand, as well as 1-year and 3-year Reserved Instances with All Upfront, Partial Upfront, and No Upfront payment options.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon Redshift's RG instances now offer rg.large and rg.12xlarge in AWS GovCloud (US-West / US-East), completing the full four-size lineup
  • Up to 2.4x faster than RA3, at 30% lower price per vCPU
  • Requires patch version P202 or later; migrate via Elastic/Classic Resize or Snapshot & Restore
  • Available On-Demand or as 1-year/3-year Reserved Instances

This one's for engineers running Redshift in GovCloud who want to tidy up their data warehouse and data lake analytics setup!
