What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon S3 Vectors is now available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) Region. S3 Vectors is purpose-built vector storage designed for AI agents, inference, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and semantic search at billion-vector scale. It offers the same elasticity, durability, and availability as Amazon S3, with a dedicated set of APIs for storing, accessing, and querying vectors without provisioning any infrastructure.

The story so far

S3 Vectors was already available in a number of AWS Regions, but not yet in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. That cloud is built to keep both data and operations entirely within the EU, run independently for organizations that face strict regulatory or data sovereignty requirements. Until now, building a vector search or RAG stack on S3 Vectors while meeting those sovereignty requirements wasn't an option.

What changes

  • S3 Vectors' vector storage is now directly available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) Region
  • You get the same S3-like experience for storing and querying vectors, with no infrastructure to manage
  • European organizations with strict data sovereignty requirements can now build AI agent, RAG, and semantic search infrastructure entirely within a sovereign cloud
