Amazon SNS message payloads jump 4x to 1 MiB!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! I found a nice update for Amazon SNS today!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon SNS now supports message payloads up to 1 MiB. That's 4 times bigger than before!
The story so far
Amazon SNS is a fully managed pub/sub messaging service that lets you decouple and scale microservices, distributed systems, and serverless applications.
Until now, though, each message was capped at 256 KiB. As workloads like application integration, IoT, and generative AI increasingly need to exchange larger amounts of data in a single message, that 256 KiB limit meant developers had to offload or split payloads before publishing. Kind of a hassle, right?
What changes
By setting the new MaximumMessageSize topic attribute, you can now publish message payloads up to 1 MiB directly. And this works for both SNS Standard and SNS FIFO topics!
If you're building applications around large data in areas like application integration, IoT, or generative AI, this means you no longer need extra code to split or offload payloads before publishing.
Dive Deep
Topics with MaximumMessageSize set above 256 KiB have specific supported subscription types.
- Amazon SQS
- Amazon Data Firehose
- AWS Lambda
These three subscription types are supported, with up to 100 total subscriptions per topic. If your existing subscribers fall within these supported services, migrating shouldn't require major changes.
The 1 MiB support is available today in all AWS Regions where Amazon SNS is available. Check the Amazon SNS Developer Guide for more details on sending large payloads.
Wrap-up
- Amazon SNS message payload limit increased from 256 KiB to 1 MiB (4x)
- Just set the new
MaximumMessageSizetopic attribute to enable it - Works with both SNS Standard and SNS FIFO topics
- Topics above 256 KiB support SQS, Data Firehose, and Lambda subscriptions (up to 100 subscriptions per topic)
- Available today in all AWS Regions
This update is a great fit if you're working with large payloads on SNS, especially for IoT or generative AI workloads!
