What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, Amazon WorkSpaces Applications now has monitoring built directly into the service console. Administrators can check real-time session-level metrics, instance-level resource data, and network performance metrics without needing third-party monitoring tools or Amazon CloudWatch expertise.

Specifically, here's what you can now do:

  • Fleet-wide capacity visibility (see active sessions and resource utilization at a glance)
  • Customizable session tables you can filter by user ID, performance metrics, and instance ID
  • Correlated graphical views showing frame rate, input latency, bandwidth, and CPU/memory/GPU usage on shared timelines

All of these metrics are still available in Amazon CloudWatch too, so you can pick whichever experience fits your needs.

The story so far

Until now, enterprise customers running large WorkSpaces Applications deployments had to rely on external monitoring solutions or build complex custom CloudWatch dashboards themselves. Without deep CloudWatch expertise, tracking fine-grained metrics like session frame rate or latency wasn't easy.

What changes

With this update, you get comprehensive monitoring the moment you open the console, with zero configuration required. Even without CloudWatch expertise, you can quickly grasp everything from per-session details to fleet-wide capacity, which should make it easier to spot signs of trouble in day-to-day operations.

It's simple to use, too: just log into the WorkSpaces Applications console, go to the fleets menu, and select a fleet to see its active session metrics. This feature is available today in every AWS Region where Amazon WorkSpaces Applications is offered.
