AWS Backup Restore Testing Now Supports Amazon Redshift

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

A backup only counts if you can restore it, and there's good news on exactly that!

What was announced?

AWS announced that AWS Backup restore testing now supports Amazon Redshift.

The story so far

Restore testing automates periodic restore runs for your backups. Redshift couldn't be part of those plans before. Now you can include it alongside other supported resources.

What changes

You can confirm that your Redshift backups restore successfully and measure how long restores take. That helps you evaluate recovery readiness and meet regulatory and compliance requirements for disaster recovery and business continuity.

Dive Deep

A restore testing plan automatically does the following:

  • Selects recovery points
  • Runs restores on a schedule
  • Measures restore job completion time against your recovery time objectives (RTO)

To get started:

  • Create a restore testing plan
  • Assign your Redshift resources by ARN or tag
  • Choose whether each test restores the latest or a random eligible recovery point
  • Optionally use restore testing validation to confirm the restored resource before AWS Backup deletes the test resources

You can use the AWS Backup console, the AWS CLI, or the AWS SDKs. It's available in all Regions where AWS Backup supports both restore testing and Redshift.

Wrap-up

  • AWS Backup restore testing now covers Amazon Redshift
  • Restore success and duration (against RTO) are checked automatically and regularly
  • Pick targets by ARN or tag, with the latest or a random recovery point
  • Optional validation before cleanup

This is for operations folks who want to back up their data warehouse recovery plan with real numbers!
