AWS DevOps Agent Can Now Chat With You Right Inside Slack!

Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today I've got a AWS DevOps Agent update that ops teams are going to love.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS DevOps Agent now supports bidirectional communication within Slack. That means you can run the entire investigation lifecycle for your AWS, multicloud, and on-premises operations right inside Slack, from start to finish.

Just @mention AWS DevOps Agent in any connected Slack private channel to kick off or steer an investigation. Everything below gets captured in the same thread:

  • Context your teammates add
  • Findings the agent surfaces
  • Recommended actions

You can also ask questions directly in the thread about AWS resources, system metrics, alarm status, deployment history, and incident patterns.

The story so far

Until now, on-call engineers and DevOps teams dealt with fragmented workflows during high-severity incidents. They had to context-switch between their communication platform (Slack) and their investigation tools in the middle of responding to critical issues.

What changes

This update brings the conversation and the investigation into the same place. Since incident response already tends to happen in Slack, the investigation capability now lives right where the team already is. That cuts the cognitive load of switching tools and should make production operations noticeably more efficient.

Dive Deep

Bidirectional Slack communication is available in all commercial AWS Regions where AWS DevOps Agent is currently supported. AWS has published a user guide covering setup, and you can check the release history page for the latest AWS DevOps Agent features.

The original announcement doesn't mention pricing, so I'll leave that out here.

Wrap-up

  • You can now kick off an incident investigation just by @mentioning AWS DevOps Agent in a connected Slack private channel
  • Team context, agent findings, and recommended actions all land in the same thread
  • You can ask directly in the thread about AWS resources, metrics, alarms, deployment history, and incident patterns
  • Available in every commercial region where AWS DevOps Agent is supported
  • Great for on-call engineers and DevOps teams who want to stop bouncing between tools during an incident!
