Ad Insertion Now Works Even in Low-Latency Live Streams! MediaTailor Adds LL-HLS Support

Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today's news is about ad insertion and low-latency live streaming.

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that AWS Elemental MediaTailor now supports Low-Latency HTTP Live Streaming (LL-HLS) ad insertion, implemented using HLS Interstitials. MediaTailor is a channel-assembly and personalized ad-insertion service for monetizing live streams, linear channels, and VOD content.

The story so far

LL-HLS reduces latency by delivering partial segments and letting players hold a playlist request open until the next segment part is ready — which requires media playlists to stay cacheable at the CDN edge. The traditional way of stitching ads directly into each viewer's media playlist broke that cacheability, making it hard to insert ads without giving up LL-HLS's low-latency benefit.

What changes

HLS Interstitials reference ads as a separate playlist instead of stitching them into each viewer's playlist.

  • Every viewer receives the same cacheable playlist
  • Low-latency playback holds up even at scale
  • The ad decision server call moves off the manifest request path

This approach has already been proven in production on live sporting events with multi-million viewership, and fits use cases like live sports, news, betting and wagering, watch parties, and interactive live formats where latency is a product requirement.

Dive Deep

Low-Latency HLS ad insertion is available in every AWS region where AWS Elemental MediaTailor operates. For more detail, check the MediaTailor product page and the server-guided ad insertion documentation — you can get started right from the MediaTailor console.

Wrap-up

  • AWS Elemental MediaTailor now supports LL-HLS ad insertion.
  • HLS Interstitials let every viewer share the same cacheable playlist.
  • Large live events can now insert ads while keeping low latency.
  • It's already proven in production on multi-million-viewer live sports.
  • Worth checking out if you run latency-sensitive streaming products like sports, betting, or watch-party experiences.
