RDS for Oracle can now copy option groups during cross-Region snapshot copy
Hi, it's Shiichan! This update cuts steps for anyone keeping Oracle backups in another Region.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New says Amazon RDS for Oracle now lets you copy the option group associated with a DB snapshot when you copy that snapshot to another AWS Region.
Option groups are used to enable and configure features in RDS for Oracle, and they are specific to the Region where you create them.
The story so far
Previously, to replicate RDS backups that had option groups to a different Region, you had to:
- Copy the snapshot without the option group
- Recreate the option group in the target Region
- Then restore the snapshot
What changes
You no longer need to separate the steps. You can specify the option group copy in the same request as the snapshot copy.
Dive Deep
It uses the existing boolean parameter CopyOptionGroup on the CopyDBSnapshot API and CLI commands. It now supports cross-Region copy, along with cross-account copy.
CopyOptionGroup = true
Setting it to true copies the option group from the source snapshot to the destination snapshot in the target Region.
It's available on Amazon RDS for Oracle in all commercial AWS Regions and the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. See the Amazon RDS API documentation for details.
Wrap-up
- Option groups can be copied together with a cross-Region snapshot copy
- Just set
CopyOptionGroupto true onCopyDBSnapshot - No need to recreate the option group in the target Region
- Available in all commercial Regions and GovCloud (US)
This is for database folks who replicate Oracle backups to another Region for DR!
