AWS HealthOmics Now Streams Real-Time Run Metrics to CloudWatch!

Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today I've got an AWS HealthOmics update for you.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS HealthOmics can now publish real-time run metrics to Amazon CloudWatch while your workflows are executing. HealthOmics is a HIPAA-eligible, fully managed bioinformatics workflow service that helps healthcare and life sciences customers scale their scientific work.

The update adds 14 new run metrics covering:

  • CPU usage
  • GPU usage
  • Memory usage
  • File system usage
  • I/O metrics
  • Network throughput
  • Ephemeral storage usage

The story so far

Until now, there wasn't a great way to see how much a running workflow was actually using in real time. If CPU or GPU became a bottleneck, or memory and storage were running low, you might not notice until a task actually failed. Tracking down the cause sometimes meant opening a support case.

What changes

With real-time run metrics, you can identify CPU or GPU bottlenecks and catch memory or storage exhaustion before a task fails — all without opening a support case. You can also track file system throughput, and by comparing actual usage against your allocated resources, right-size your compute and storage configurations. That's a small but genuinely useful improvement if you're running bioinformatics workflows in production.

Dive Deep

These metrics are emitted using the Amazon CloudWatch OpenTelemetry standard, so you can wire them into third-party observability tools in addition to native CloudWatch dashboards and alarms.

Real-time run metrics are currently available in these regions:

  • US East (N. Virginia, Ohio)
  • US West (Oregon)
  • Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, London)
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo)

As for pricing, Amazon CloudWatch charges for these run metrics based on the volume of metric data ingested — check the CloudWatch pricing page for details.

Wrap-up

  • AWS HealthOmics now streams 14 real-time metrics — CPU, GPU, memory, file system, I/O, network, and ephemeral storage — to CloudWatch while workflows run
  • You can catch bottlenecks and resource exhaustion early, without opening a support case
  • Metrics use the OpenTelemetry standard, so they work with native CloudWatch dashboards/alarms as well as third-party tools
  • Available in major US, European, and Asia Pacific regions, billed based on CloudWatch metric ingestion volume
  • Great for anyone running bioinformatics workflows on HealthOmics who wants to visualize resource usage and optimize costs!
