AWS just dropped a surprise new Availability Zone in London!

What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, a fourth Availability Zone, "eu-west-2d," has been added to the Europe (London) Region (eu-west-2). It's an infrastructure expansion to meet ever-growing demand for cloud compute.

The new Availability Zone offers next-generation AI and ML compute, including Amazon EC2, Trn3, and P6 accelerated instances, alongside general-purpose compute.

The story so far

Until now, the Europe (London) Region ran on three Availability Zones, which limited your options if you wanted to keep AI/ML training and inference workloads on the latest accelerated instances entirely within London.

What changes

With the addition of eu-west-2d, customers in the London Region can now distribute applications across four Availability Zones, making it easier to build fault-tolerant, highly available architectures. AI/ML teams can now run model training and inference on the latest accelerated instances, like Trn3 and P6, entirely within the London Region.

Access works the same way as before, through the AWS Management Console, APIs, and your existing workflows, with no tooling changes required. Pricing follows the standard Europe (London) Region rates.
