Lambda Managed Instances Welcomes Graviton5 — Up to 25% Faster!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! AWS just dropped another exciting processor update, and I couldn't wait to share it with you. AWS Lambda now supports the latest-generation Graviton5 chips!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, AWS Lambda Managed Instances now supports EC2 instances powered by AWS Graviton5. Here are the newly supported instance types:
- C9g
- C9gd
- M9g
- M9gd
Compared to Graviton4-powered instances, these deliver up to 25% better compute performance.
The story so far
Lambda Managed Instances lets you run your Lambda functions on your own AWS EC2 instances while keeping the operational simplicity Lambda is known for. AWS fully manages the infrastructure side for you — instance lifecycle, OS and runtime patching, built-in routing, load balancing, and auto-scaling based on parameters you configure — so you can focus on writing code.
Until now, though, the newest Graviton5 generation wasn't part of the instance lineup you could pick from, so you couldn't tap into its performance gains through Lambda Managed Instances.
What changes
Starting today, you can specify a Graviton5 instance type — C9g, C9gd, M9g, or M9gd — when you create a capacity provider for Lambda Managed Instances.
If you leave the instance type set to default, Lambda automatically factors Graviton5 instances into the pool it chooses from, based on your function's configured architecture, memory size, and memory-to-vCPU ratio. That means if your functions already use the default setting, you might get the performance boost without changing anything.
You still get EC2's cost-efficient pricing and Lambda's hands-off infrastructure management — just with a faster processor underneath. That's great news if you're running CPU-intensive workloads on Lambda.
Dive Deep
Graviton5 support is available in any AWS Region where both Lambda Managed Instances and the relevant EC2 instance types are available. The announcement doesn't list specific regions, so it's worth checking availability for your region before you try it out.
You can pick your instance type in two ways: specify C9g, C9gd, M9g, or M9gd explicitly when creating a capacity provider, or leave it on default and let Lambda choose automatically.
Wrap-up
- Lambda Managed Instances now supports Graviton5-powered C9g, C9gd, M9g, and M9gd instances
- Up to 25% better compute performance compared to Graviton4-powered instances
- Choose an instance type explicitly, or let Lambda pick automatically with the default setting
- Infrastructure management stays the same — you just get a performance upgrade
If you're running CPU-heavy workloads on Lambda Managed Instances, or you've been curious about the latest Graviton generation, this update is worth a look!
