What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS Lambda's Provisioned Mode for Amazon SQS event source mappings (ESMs) now supports a maximum of 10,000 event pollers, up from 2,000 — a 5x increase. This means a single ESM can now reach up to 100,000 concurrent invocations. It's generally available in all AWS Commercial Regions.

The story so far

Customers use Amazon SQS as an event source for Lambda to build mission-critical applications like real-time order processing, financial transaction pipelines, IoT telemetry ingestion, and large-scale fan-out workloads, where delays in processing can directly hurt business outcomes.

Provisioned Mode for SQS ESM lets you configure a minimum and maximum number of event pollers to tune throughput for your application. But until now, the maximum was capped at 2,000 pollers, which limited how many concurrent invocations a single ESM could reach and forced customers to split workloads across multiple ESMs to scale further.

What changes

With the new 10,000-poller cap, a single ESM can now reach up to 100,000 concurrent invocations. That means large-scale workloads with strict latency and throughput requirements — the kind that previously required splitting across multiple ESMs — can now run with a simpler, single-ESM setup. Less architectural complexity means less operational overhead for teams running these systems.

You can activate this by configuring a minimum and maximum number of event pollers using any of the following:

  • ESM API
  • AWS Console
  • AWS CLI
  • AWS SDK
  • AWS CloudFormation
  • AWS SAM

Billing is based on a unit called Event Poller Unit (EPU) — you pay for the event pollers you actually use. Check the Lambda pricing page for exact rates.
