What was announced?
According to AWS's What's New, a fourth Availability Zone called "eu-west-2d" has been added to the Europe (London) Region (eu-west-2). It's an infrastructure expansion meant to meet growing demand for cloud compute, and it's aimed at delivering next-generation AI and ML capacity.
Why it matters
More Availability Zones (AZs) means you can spread your applications across more of them, making it easier to build fault-isolated, highly available architectures. What stands out this time is that the new capacity includes the latest high-performance instances used for AI and ML training and inference. For teams that want to keep their AI workloads entirely within the London Region, this is a welcome expansion.
What changes
With the new "eu-west-2d" AZ, users in eu-west-2 can now spread applications across four AZs. Beyond improving fault tolerance, AI and ML teams can now run training and inference on the latest accelerated instance types entirely within the London Region.
