What was announced?

According to AWS's "AWS What's New," Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is now generally available (GA) as a storage target for block storage workloads in AWS Transform for migrations. You can now choose FSx for ONTAP as a migration target alongside the existing Amazon EBS option.

This means you can migrate block storage directly to FSx for ONTAP as part of the same migration wave that handles your compute and networking, without needing an intermediate storage platform or a separate migration tool.

The story so far

Until now, Amazon EBS was the storage target when migrating block storage with AWS Transform. If you wanted to move to FSx for ONTAP from NetApp ONTAP, it sounds like you had to bring in extra tools outside of AWS Transform's migration workflow to make that happen.

What changes

With FSx for ONTAP now an official storage target, you can handle migrations from NetApp ONTAP, other block storage platforms, or VMware environments all within the same migration workflow. Your data access patterns and operational processes stay the same after the move too, which should keep things calmer for the team once the migration is done.

The destination is a fully managed, production-ready shared storage service, so you get both ONTAP's enterprise capabilities and AWS's scalability and resiliency in one package.
