I've got some exciting news from AWS today, so let me share it right away!

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Claude Opus 5, Anthropic's latest and most advanced Opus model, is now available on AWS. It's described as the most advanced Opus model yet, delivering a step-change in coding, long-running agents, and complex professional work. It understands and navigates codebases like an experienced engineer, writes production-quality code while adapting its strategy as it works, and powers dependable agents that can run for hours or even overnight, finding paths around obstacles and recovering from errors to reach their objectives. It also brings deeper reasoning to long documents and higher accuracy to complex analysis, with the largest gains on document-heavy enterprise work.

The main story here isn't the model itself so much as how it's now accessible on AWS, so that's what I'll focus on.

The story so far

AWS has offered Claude models through Amazon Bedrock for a while now, and whenever Anthropic ships a new flagship model, people naturally wonder when it'll land on AWS. This time, Claude Opus 5 has officially joined the AWS lineup, and notably, it's compatible with zero data retention (ZDR) from the start.

What changes

Teams building on AWS can now access the latest Claude Opus 5 through either Amazon Bedrock or Claude Platform on AWS. For organizations with strict data governance requirements, this means they can adopt a top-tier intelligence model while relying on AWS-native mechanisms like ZDR and regional data residency. Since it plugs into existing AWS authentication and billing, teams can add it without having to stand up a whole new environment.

According to the announcement, there are two ways to access Claude Opus 5 on AWS:

  • Amazon Bedrock: Zero data retention (ZDR) is enabled by default, giving you Opus' top-tier intelligence while meeting your data governance requirements. If you want ZDR guaranteed by default, Bedrock is the way to go; if you prefer Anthropic's native feature set, Claude Platform on AWS is the option.
