Hey everyone, it's Shii! AWS Blog's weekly roundup, "AWS Weekly Roundup," is out again this week. From a new EC2 status check to IAM role management and an OpenAI integration, there's a lot packed in, so let me round it all up for you!

What was announced?

This week's roundup is written by AWS's Chief Evangelist, Channy Yun. It opens with a story about the OpenSearch and Valkey teams visiting Korea, meeting developers and contributors at Open Source Summit Korea 2026 and MCP DevSummit Seoul 2026.

Last week's major launches

Three things got the spotlight this time:

  • Amazon EC2 application status checks: a new status check that can detect issues like a web server no longer accepting requests, the Docker daemon not running, or misconfigured networking
  • AWS IAM Role Manager: a new feature that automates setting up IAM roles, now available from 6 AWS service consoles
  • OpenAI Daybreak on Amazon Bedrock: AI capabilities for cybersecurity. There are two variants, "Daybreak Blue" (powered by GPT-5.6 Sol) for vulnerability discovery and detection engineering, and "Daybreak Red" (powered by GPT-5.6 Cyber) for vulnerability research and exploit reproduction, both now available to eligible customers

What changes

The added EC2 status checks should make it easier to catch application-level issues early that were previously hard to notice. IAM Role Manager gives you a service-provided starting point for role design, work that used to be mostly manual, which should help cut down on permission misconfigurations. And with OpenAI Daybreak, teams doing vulnerability research or incident response get access to a security-focused AI model right through Bedrock.

  • AWS Certificate Manager: email-based domain validation is being discontinued on September 30, 2027, with DNS validation recommended as the replacement
  • Next-generation AWS VPN Client: now built on OpenVPN3, adding CLI support and admin controls while staying backward compatible with existing endpoints
  • Oracle ExaDB-XS (Oracle Exadata on Exascale): a new option for Oracle AI Database@AWS that brings Exadata-class performance on a pay-as-you-go model, with compute and storage that scale independently

On top of that, OpenSearch 3.7 brings a 5.5x improvement in vector search speed, and Valkey 9.1 delivers up to 17% higher throughput and a 20% reduction in string memory usage.
