You Can Now Ask Amazon Q Console About CloudTrail Logs in Plain Language!

Hey, it's Shii-chan! Today's news makes AWS log investigation a lot more approachable. Let's take a look!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

This comes from AWS What's New. AWS CloudTrail, the service that records API activity across your account for security auditing, compliance, and operational troubleshooting, now integrates with Amazon Q Console, letting you investigate account activity using natural language.

The story so far

Investigating CloudTrail events used to mean writing queries or manually parsing log files. Even checking whether your trails were configured correctly, or spotting gaps in logging coverage, took a fair amount of manual work.

What changes

Now you can just ask Amazon Q Console questions in plain language.

  • Configuration checks — ask whether your CloudTrail trails are properly configured, find gaps in logging coverage, or confirm which data event sources you're tracking
  • Security investigations — ask who accessed a specific IAM role, what changes were made to your VPC configuration, or whether there were unauthorized access attempts in the past week
  • Operational troubleshooting — find who created or deleted specific resources, identify which API calls are generating errors, trace activity from a specific IP address, or figure out why your bill spiked

Amazon Q Console queries your CloudTrail trails, associated CloudWatch log groups, and event data stores on your behalf, and grounds its answers in your actual account activity instead of generic documentation.

Dive Deep

This integration is available in every AWS commercial Region where Amazon Q Console is supported. To use it, just open Amazon Q in the AWS Management Console.

Wrap-up

  • AWS CloudTrail now integrates with Amazon Q Console, letting you investigate account activity in natural language
  • Handles configuration checks, security investigations, and operational troubleshooting without writing queries
  • Queries span CloudTrail trails, CloudWatch log groups, and event data stores, grounded in your real account data
  • Available in every AWS commercial Region where Amazon Q Console is supported

Worth trying right away if you regularly dig through CloudTrail for security or operational investigations!
